Concrete Home History
Thomas Edison actually seems to be the originator of the design of Pre Fab Concrete homes. His original design however which was first tried in 1907, was flawed.
Although Edison's concept original concept did not work out well, it appears that this concept was adopted by others. In 1911 Concrete City in Nanticoke PA opened to house the workers of a mining company and although they closed in 1924 due to a lack of indoor plumbing, the homes still stand today. Even a demolition attempt that involved 100 STICKS OF DYNAMITE were unable to topple these structures. Considering Concrete City followed Edison's Concept of poured solid structures and has proven to be less superior than the design of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Homes, this is pretty monumental to think about..
Other examples of the design Edison began are Gunkanjima, Japan (Hashima Island), and structures know as Wimpey no-fine houses which were common in Great Britan becoming one of their most common building techniques.
The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Homes were actually made by pouring their walls, floors and ceilings into rebar re-enforced forms on the ground while vibrating the forms in order to eliminate air and solidify the structure. Those pieces were then lifted with cranes, put into place and joined together. The roof tops and porch roofs are made of ceramic tile and the main roofs are still not leaking after being in place for almost one hundred years.
Unlike most of the examples cited above the Company Homes are not only still standing, but have families still living in them as well. It is the only original concrete pre fab multi unit dwelling still operational and the very first fully functional complex like it ever built. WE CAN NOT ALLOW THIS HISTORICAL SITE OF GREAT IMPORTANCE TO BE DESTROYED FOR LOW INCOME HOUSING.
